Hot Hawaiian Pizza

For Episode 4 of Pizza Party Friday, this thick-crust Hawaiian pizza is a bold twist on a classic—layered with ham, crispy bacon, grilled pineapple, and jalapeños for heat. It’s inspired by nostalgic Pizza Hut pan pies and made even better with a drizzle of hot honey.

Instructions

To prepare dough:
  1. Mix warm water, yeast, sugar and olive oil in a measuring glass. Allow to sit for 5 minutes for the yeast to bloom.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. When the yeast is bloomed, add the yeast mixture to the flour and stir until it becomes a shaggy dough.
  4. Transfer dough to a work surface, and knead for about 10 minutes or until it becomes a smooth dough. (This can also be done in a stand mixer!)
  5. Drizzle the bottom of a large bowl with olive oil. Add dough to the bowl and cover with a kitchen towel and allow to rise for 1 hour in a warm area.
For the pizza sauce:
  1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor or with a hand blender and set aside. (You will not use all of it for this recipe but it can be frozen for your next pizza night or last up to a week in the fridge!)
To prepare grilled pineapple:
  1. Preheat a grill to 400-450 F.
  2. Slice the top and bottom off the pineapple. Peel the pineapple by slicing off the outside about 1/2 inch in, ensuring the spikey parts are gone.
  3. Then, slice the pineapple into disks about an inch thick, there should be about 6 disks.
  4. Add the pineapple disks to the grill and sear on both sides about 4-5 minutes per side till they have a nice char on both sides.
  5. Remove from the grill and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. When slicing, ensure to discard the middle core part and dice the rest into bite-sized pieces.
For the maple bacon:
  1. Turn the oven to 400 F. Add the slices of bacon to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Add the slices of bacon and add to the oven. It's okay if the oven is still pre-heating, this will help with rendering the fat of the bacon slowly.
  2. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until crispy to your liking. In the last 2 minutes of cooking, add 1 tbsp of maple syrup or brown sugar.
  3. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before dabbing off with paper towel and dicing finely.
To bake the pizza:
  1. Preheat oven to 425 F. Roll out your pizza dough into a large circle. In a large cast iron pan, fit your pizza dough in the pan the best you can.
  2. Add about 3/4 - 1 cup sauce, depending on how saucey you like it, leaving a ring around the outside uncovered so that you have a crust. Add on your shredded cheese, bacon bits, sliced jalapeño, ham, and grilled pineapple.
  3. Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove from the oven and drizzle with hot honey before slicing and serving!
